after a bit of thought and feedback from other students and my tutors I believe I now know where I need to head for my final design for this project. My first concept was starting to look like a solid idea but after hearing feedback from my tutor I realised that it was basically doing the opposite of what they were looking for in turning something complicated and organic into a simple sphere. So here's my new idea with my first concept (stay with me here) reverse the process and make it a sphere being split in rotation and turning into 2 koi.
So my next question is really how to do this and also what materials should I use to make it look good? I mean there's so many elements I need to consider and finalise before I can really get started, such as what style should the koi be in (realistic, ink painted traditional, cartoon etc) so if I was to do this idea (and chances are that I will) then I'll most likely use a texture map like this. I really want to try and make the Koi look like live ink paintings (real traditional Japanese looking) almost like Okami style

If I didn't go for a traditional Ink look then I guess I would do a realistic (or at least a semi - realistic) look with the finished koi. So real scales for the material map and just edit it on photo shop to get the yin - yang look rather than paint it myself like I was gonna do with the ink okami look.

Like I said, a lot to consider and once I do decide what to do and in what style I also actually have to make it into a 30 to 60sec film where one transforms into the other.
